big day with books

Today I got my copy of this book I ordered a while back and have been looking forward to receiving. I am wanting to get into doing some slip work on my earthenware pottery and thought this might offer the help I was wanting. But the BIG SURPRISE and SPECIAL TREAT was finding two of my blogging friends featured in the book: RON PHILBECK and DOUG FITCH! How much fun is that! I have enjoyed exchanging notes with Ron and Doug for several years in and outside our blogs. I am so thrilled for each of them.

Another book that I am enjoying and which Jim (my husband) is also excited about is "The Elegance of the Hedgehog" which was suggested to me by Ron sometime back. It is not an easy read but a very stimulating one.

I just love the bowls on the cover of that book! Wish I lived next door, I would come over and take a look!

It's a good little book, really nicely written, a thrill to be in print with Ron. Tracey, the pots on the front are made by a very good friend of mine, a Japanese potter working in England called Yo Thom. She makes some beautiful pots http://www.yothom.com/

That looks like a good book. Instead of stabbing in the dark with my slip work, I might have to pick up a copy and learn from the experts. I'm adapting the firing log you sent me, seems I need to make more notes than I thought.

Linda, I saw your mention of expanding your record keeping for the kiln firings on your blog. I'd love to learn what you are keeping. I copy the photo of the cones onto the record and that is helpful. And I've begun trying to keep notes on where in the kiln each piece is fires. The little difference in cone (top to bottom) sometimes makes a big difference--but that is way too much for my addled brain to keep track of!

Gay -- I bought that slip book - while it has fabulous work in it, I was a little disappointed that most of the recipes are based on ingredients in the UK -- we can't get lead bisicilate here. I did enjoy seeing the different techniques of working with slips though.

Well, I was most interested in getting Ron's help. He has sent me help before but this was more concise. And the big thrill was seeing 2 of my 'friends' in the book--I've never had that experience before! Both Ron and Doug have been very special friends to me over the past few years--friendships I treasure--as I do yours!

I just got "The Elegance of the Hedgehog" too. Alas, I didn't pack it as my baggage weight limit had been reached.
