out of the kiln

The firing went well. I was disappointed in the glaze cover--as I expected to be. It was just too thin a coat which has become standard operating procedure for me. I gotta figure it out. I might refire--it worked last time. In the meantime, they don't look bad--just not what I wanted.

The inside, which I poured and used the white majolica glaze, is fine. I sprayed the outside. I could see that the coat was too thin, yet it had begun running down the sides (which you can see on the little bowl on the tray) and I did not want that. I am missing something!

I absolutely love the direction your work is taking. so wonderful glaze problems or not these are great.

Gay - I love these pieces! I love the shapes! I can't tell a lot from a photo, but I like the color as well.
And if you are not happy with the glaze -- re-fire!!

Maybe when you are using your sprayer -- add a coat & then let it dry before adding a second coat. That might allow you to get better coverage.

Would it work to spray a number of light coats of glaze to build up to the thickness that you want? That might prevent the drips but get you the coverage.

Yes, I think that may help--letting a coat dry a bit and add others. And I need to do more testing to find a glaze that does more what I want a glaze to do! I think I need a more forgiving glaze. The majolica glaze covered much nicer--I sprayed it on a tile and got good cover.

I did not mention that I was also 'testing' my attempt at slip trailing on the covered pots and on some large tiles. I did not know if they would show up under the glaze--but they did and I am pleased about that. I'm just too impatient. I want what I want when I want it--without the struggle to get there!

Thanks for helping me think through to a possible solution--at least a next step!

These look great Gay. I sent you some recipes today but you'll need to test them. I really like the contrast with the red clay showing on the rims of these.
Our vision of what we want is often far ahead of what we can do. That's a good thing right!?

Ron, That does put a positive spin on an otherwise dis-heartening experience! Thanks or the good thought.

Chiming in to say I think these look great. The slip-trailing is a definite winner. The knobs to the lids are really interesting, and the contrast with the satiny cream glaze and the red clay. Very nice indeed.
